The rules of the game

Poker is played with a 52-card rummy deck consisting of spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs. Each suit has 13 different cards in ascending order of value from 2 to ace.

Each card counts for its printed value. The royal flush is the highest possible hand. Please note: In poker, the suits have no ranking order. This means that an ace of clubs is not ranked higher than an ace of spades. Both suits have the same value.

Poker hands in order of rank

1. Royal Flush

The highest and strongest hand in poker is the royal flush. A royal flush consists of a straight in one suit (spades, hearts, diamonds, or clubs), i.e., five consecutive cards starting with 10 and ending with the ace.

2. Straight Flush

The second strongest poker hand is the Straight Flush. A Straight Flush consists of a straight in one suit (clubs, spades, hearts, or diamonds), i.e., five consecutive cards.

3. Four of a Kind

The third strongest poker hand consists of four cards of the same rank, for example four kings, and is called four of a kind or poker.

4. Full House

The fourth strongest poker hand is the full house. A full house consists of a pair and three of a kind.

5. Flush

A flush ranks higher than a straight. A flush requires five cards of the same suit (clubs, spades, hearts, or diamonds).

6. Straight

A straight is called a “straight” in poker jargon. A straight is formed from five consecutive cards. The ace is a special card in straights. It can complete a straight as both the lowest and highest card: either as A-2-3-4-5 or as 10-J-Q-K-A.

7. Three of a kind

Three of a kind consists of three cards of the same rank.

8. Two pairs

If a player has two cards of the same value, they have two pairs.

9. Pair

A pair consists of two cards of the same value (e.g., ace, queen, or 10).

10. High card

If a player has not even made a pair, their highest card counts (“high card”). The best high card is an ace
